How to remove thumbnails from photos on mac?

I recently had an issue with my photos on my MacBook Pro where I could see them, but couldn't export them. I later figured out that my friend had messed things up and now the original photos are gone. I would still like to get the thumbnails, but I have no clue how to transfer them to a usb drive. Any ideas?

MacBook Pro, OS X El Capitan (10.11.6)

I have a problem with thumb nails that may not be all grouped in a thumbnail folder. Photos corrupted a library of mine when i first updated. So instead of having photos automatically import my images i dragged and dropped what i thought were all master images into Photos. Seemed to work but now trying to create an album for deceased friends family and some of the pics are thumbnails and obviously look bad popping up in a slide show or clicking on them any way to weed out thumbnails that were imported ? I will throw out the thumbnail t album just in case some are in there i have read photos will repopulate the thumbnail folder for all its master images
